While attending a high powered Conference I once again spent some one on one time discussing local government issues with Congressman David Jolly. Attendees included U.S. Congressmen, members of the Florida House of Representatives and members of various Florida Senate Committees. It was a powerful and energetic collection of government representatives. I walked away with new and stronger bonds along with a better understanding and knowledge of the inner workings of the governmental process through the eyes of these political veterans.
After attending the League of Cities Advocacy Team meeting to discuss legislative updates and upcoming bills going to the Senate Floor. Among the commissioners and legislative members we also discussed how these bills could impact our community. This was an informative and affirmative action session.

Nonpartisan elections and referendum question
Voters said yes by more than 63 percent to the referendum question for a countywide tax exemption for qualified businesses.
“The economic ad valorem tax exemption legislation allows Pinellas County to encourage job creation and capital investment by new and expanding businesses and be competitive in regional and statewide economic development efforts,” said Economic Development Director Mike Meidel.
The yes vote will allow County Commissioners to grant ad valorem tax exemptions to new businesses and existing businesses that want to expand.

Effective Tuesday, Sept. 2, Pinellas County will begin a routine system maintenance program to optimize water quality. The water treatment method is being temporarily changed from chloramine to chlorine disinfection. The switch to chlorine will be in effect from Sept. 2 to Sept. 25, 2014.
The water is perfectly safe to drink during this period, though you may notice a slight difference in the taste or odor of the water.
Users of kidney dialysis machines and owners of aquatic life should not be impacted, but should contact their respective service providers for more information.
If you have questions, please visit the Pinellas County Utilities website at: http://www.pinellascounty.org/utilities, call Customer Service at 727-464-4000 or see the flyers below.

Bulletin from The Pinellas County Tax Collectors Office, Diane Nelson, CFC
Great news! Beginning September 1st, the cost to renew motor vehicle registrations is going down. The legislature passed Senate Bill 156, which will lower motor vehicle registration fees for Florida residents beginning September 1, 2014. It is projected that Florida vehicle owners will save almost $400 million a year.
In a proactive effort, our office decided to mail September renewals later than normal to reduce confusion. We want to give everyone the opportunity to take advantage of the savings this legislation offers. We would be disheartened if a resident with a September renewal accidentally renewed their vehicle registration before the 1st and missed out on the opportunity to save money because they were not informed of the new fee structure.
All September renewals will be mailed out next Monday, August 18th, and will include an informational insert about the reduced fee structure. Residents will be able to renew their registrations at the new lower rates beginning Monday, September 1st, online and Tuesday, September 2nd, in branch offices. Our offices will be closed Monday, September 1st in observance of Labor Day. However, we encourage residents to renew online at taxcollect.com on the 1st, where they may print a renewal confirmation receipt.
