According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. To pursue sustainability is to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations.”

Sustainability is a conservation-based approach to supporting the permanent economic, environmental and social health of communities as they grow and evolve.

 

Here are some ways people reflect on this issue in their community.

Commuting costs – 40% of people consider living in the proximity to frequently visited places ( grocery store, school, etc.)

28% of people said a home’s utility bills are important.

Efficient lighting – 12 % say it is very important, 38% consider it somewhat important.

Green community features (bike lanes, green spaces, community gardens, etc., 8% consider it very important, 29% consider it somewhat important.

Landscaping for water conservation – 8% consider it very important, 20 % consider it somewhat important.

Renewable energy systems – 3% consider it very important, 20 % consider it somewhat important.

When you build or remodel expect sustainability, it is increasingly prevalent feature in construction. Look to the future of your home & community.
